Types of Teas in India - Tea lovers

Chai is the National Drink of India and also the State Drink of Assam, India is second largest producer of tea in the world as well as second largest exporter of tea after China.


Types of Tea

Four main types of tea are produced based on how tea leaves are processed2:
  • Green tea (non-fermented)
  • Black tea (fermented)
  • Oolong tea (partly fermented)
  • White tea (least processing)

Tea Producing Regions of India

Following the success of tea cultivation experiments in Darjeeling and Assam in the 1800s, endeavours in other parts of India with similar natural conditions were undertaken. These efforts led to a thriving tea industry in at least ten distinct tea producing regions of North-East and South India:

  3. Dooars and Terai
  4. Kangra
  5. Nilgiri
  6. Annamalais

  9. Munnar
  10. Travancore
Indian tea culture consumed 70% of the tea within India itself and the trade, industries, exportation and production are controlled by the Tea Board of India.

Masala Chai:

Black Tea:

Black tea is a type of tea that is more oxidized than oolong, green and white teas. Black tea is generally stronger in flavour than the less oxidized teas. Black teas are processed in either of two ways, CTC (Crush, Tear, Curl) or Orthodox. The CTC method is efficient and effective for producing a better quality product from medium and lower quality leaves of consistently dark color. Orthodox processing is done either by machines or by hand. Hand processing is used for high quality teas. While the methods employed in orthodox processing differ by tea type, this style of processing results in the high quality loose tea sought by many connoisseurs. Black tea retains its flavour for several years.


Green Tea:

Green tea is made from the leaves from Camellia sinensis that have undergone minimal oxidation during processing. Green tea originated in China, but it has become associated with many cultures throughout Asia. Green tea has become the raw material for extracts used in various beverages, health foods, dietary supplements, and cosmetic items. Many varieties of green tea have been created in the countries where it is grown. These varieties can differ substantially due to variable growing conditions, horticulture, production processing, and harvesting time.
